Slot punching is inherently hard on tools and replacing them means forging and heat treating a new one from scratch. Moreover, a different punch is needed for every size hole you want to make. Issue 153 features a punch holder designed with these problems in mind, and it can be made with materials you probably have laying around the shop.

Our feature titled "Slot Punching Made Easy" shows how to accuratly punch holes by first drilling guide holes at the ends of the slot.

Rounding out the issue are tips on how to avoid trouble when slot punching. Included are ways to finish the stock around the hole, how to straighten a bar that has gone out of alignment and how to accurately start the punch.
